RESUMEN

Zirconia crown has been widely used in the field of prosthodontics. Traditional zirconia exhibits excellent mechanical properties but lacks translucency. The introduction of transparent zirconia significantly enhances its aesthetic performance. In clinical applications, factors affecting the aesthetic results of full zirconia crown should be comprehensively considered, and the most suitable restoration should be chosen. Additionally, clinicians need to design appropriate tooth preparation dimensions and methods based on an individual patient's actual situation. During the clinical bonding process of zirconia, proper surface treatment of the tooth and restoration is essential. The selection of suitable adhesives is crucial for achieving optimal bonding strength and aesthetics.

RESUMEN

At present, the commonly used clinical protocols of oral cosmetic restoration are mostly based on the oral aesthetic indexes proposed by Western developed countries (referred to as Western aesthetics), which are different from the oral aesthetic indexes unique to Chinese people (referred to as Chinese aesthetics). In the design of restoration schemes and the evaluation of restoration effects, these differences have a large or small effect on the doctor-patient-technology triad. Improper handling could directly weaken the cooperation efficiency of the three parties, reduce patient satisfaction, and even lead to medical disputes in serious cases. From doing a good job of oral cosmetic restoration in China, the connotative characteristics of Chinese oral aesthetics are introduced in this paper, and the value of oral aesthetic analysis in diagnosis and treatment is discussed. The process and method of aesthetic analysis and assessment through the modified Chinese psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics questionnaire and the evaluation ruler of the expected value of oral cosmetic restoration are further introduced in detail.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present prospective case control study was to evaluate the facial pleasantness of patients with complete and unilateral cleft lip and palate at the end of interdisciplinary rehabilitation, submitted to facial fillers based on hyaluronic acid. METHODS: The study group consisted of 18 individuals with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate, aged between 18 and 40 years (mean age 29 years) of both sexes. The patients presented a concave profile with mild to moderate maxillary deficiency, with completed orthodontic treatment and conducted by means of dentoalveolar compensations without orthognathic surgery. Participants underwent facial filling procedures with hyaluronic acid (HA) in the midface, inserted by a single operator. Standard photographs in frontal norm at rest, right profile at rest, and left profile at rest were obtained from each patient at the following operative times: (T1) pre-filler and (T2) and one-month post-filler. The photographs in T1 and T2 were randomly placed on a page of a virtual album. A 5-point Likert scale was used to assess facial pleasantness. The photographs were evaluated by two groups of evaluators consisting of 18 individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLPG=18) and 18 orthodontists with experience in the treatment of clefts (OG=18). For comparison between phases T1 and T2, and between evaluators with orofacial clefts and orthodontists, the Wilcoxon test was used (p<0,05). RESULTS: People with cleft lip and palate rated their face as more pleasant after the midface filling procedure. In the perception of the orthodontists, on the other hand, the facial pleasantness remained similar after the facial filling procedure. CONCLUSIONS: The filling of the middle third of the face in patients with cleft lip and palate treated without orthognathic surgery increased the pleasantness of the face in the opinion of laypeople with cleft lip and palate.

RESUMEN

A full account of the preceded early research tribulation that led to the development of the first visible light activated composite resin and the first visible light activator source is documented. The events took place over four years since early 1974 when a raw industrial composite resin that was radiolucent, stiff paste, universal optically opaque white color, polymerized by exposure to a prototype visible light for 120 seconds was given to developed. Four years later, the developed restorative composite resin ended up as a radiopaque, optically translucent, universal color with an additional three shades that possessed the biologic, esthetic, mechanical and physical characteristics with proven efficacy be used for esthetic zone. This conservative account of early development of a technology that must count as one of a small number of inventions during the seventies, over the years has revolutionized restorative dental practice. We were privileged and very lucky to be associated with developmental stages, stumbling blocks, and final success of the first LC Composite resin that ignited the thought process worldwide and laid the foundation for modern esthetic restoratives practiced today.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to compare various formulas for idealized proportions of the maxillary incisors to the actual dimensions of natural teeth. The Mondelli formula 1 (MF1), Mondelli formula 2 (MF2), Albers formula (AF), esthetic proportion (EP) for width and height of anterior teeth, and golden ratio (GR) were calculated for a total of 50 dental students (30 women and 20 men) who participated in the study. The following measurements were obtained directly in the participant's mouth with a digital caliper: the mesiodistal and incisogingival dimensions of the maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines; the intercanine distance; and the smile width. The participants were photographed, and the smile width was also measured on the photographs. The MF1 and MF2 were each calculated twice, using both direct measurements and photographic measurements. The projected central incisor widths calculated using the MF1, MF2, and AF were compared among themselves and against the actual measurements using analysis of variance and Fisher test for multiple comparisons (α = 0.05). The EP and GR were analyzed using descriptive statistics. There was a statistically significant difference between all of the widths projected by the formulas and the actual widths of the central incisors (P < 0.05). Whether calculated from a direct or a photographic measurement, the incisor widths projected by the MF1 and MF2 were statistically similar to each other (P > 0.05). The EP values were similar to those reported in the literature. Only 2% of the participants had an incisor width ratio (central incisor/lateral incisor) that matched the GR of 1.618, while 86% fell within the range of 1.2 to 1.4. Overall, the proportions calculated with the MF1, MF2, AF, EP, and GR did not exactly match the actual dimensions of natural teeth. The formulas and the proportions available in the literature can assist in esthetic planning, but the individual characteristics of each patient and expertise of the dentist should guide treatment for each case.

OBJECTIVES: Fibula free flaps (FFF) are the standard approach to mandibular reconstruction after partial resection, with the goal of restoring aesthetics and masticatory function. The graft position affects both and must be carefully selected. Correlations between sagittal positioning and upper airway anatomy are known from orthognathic surgery. This study aims to evaluate changes in mandibular position and upper airway anatomy after reconstructive surgery with FFF and corresponding correlations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mandibular position after reconstruction was evaluated using three-dimensional datasets of pre- and postoperative computed tomography scans of patients treated between 2020 and 2022. Three-dimensional measurements were performed on both condyles and the symphyseal region. Changes in upper airway volume and minimum cross-sectional area (minCSA) were analysed. Intra-rater reliability was assessed. Correlations between changes in upper airway anatomy and sagittal mandibular position were tested. RESULTS: The analysis included 35 patients. Intra-rater reliability was good to excellent. Condylar deviations and rotations were mostly rated as small. Changes in symphyseal position were considerably greater. Median airway volume decreased in the oropharynx and hypopharynx. Posterior deviation of the symphysis was associated with a decreasing minCSA in the hypopharynx and vice versa. CONCLUSIONS: The overall accuracy of mandibular reconstructions with FFF is high, but there is room for optimization. The focus of research should be extended from masticatory to respiratory rehabilitation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Effects on respiratory function should be considered prior to graft positioning. The clinical relevance of upper airway changes within the complex rehabilitation of reconstructive surgery patients needs to be further investigated.

Hypoplastic maxilla is a common skeletal anomaly that compromises function and esthetics. Beyond just a narrow-appearing smile, this abnormality presents significant restorative challenges in adult patients as it is often associated with crowding, compromised axial inclination of the teeth, lack of alveolar bone support, root proximity, and occlusal trauma.1 Recent research also confirms association of maxillary deficiency with nasal stenosis and a predisposition to compromised nasal airflow and pharyngeal collapse during sleep.2,3 Maxillary transverse skeletal deficiency is often but not always associated with posterior dental cross-bite. In most cases, maxillary posterior teeth are flared buccally and mandibular posterior teeth are excessively lingually inclined masking the underlying skeletal problem.4 Advances in 3D imaging in dentistry, namely ultra-low radiation cone-beam imaging technology, have significantly enhanced clinicians' ability to diagnose and subsequently treat a maxillary transverse deficiency.5.

BACKGROUND: Treating white spot lesions (WSLs) with resin infiltration alone may not be sufficient, raising questions about its compatibility with other treatments amid controversial or incomplete data. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the aesthetic feasibility of resin infiltration combined with bleaching, as well as its potential mechanical effect on ceramic bonding to WSLs. METHODS: One hundred and fifty flat enamel surfaces of bovine incisors were prepared. Ninety specimens were deminerailized and randomly assigned to three groups(n = 30): post-bleaching resin infiltration (Bl-R), pre-bleaching resin infiltration (R-Bl), and only resin infiltration (R). Color, surface roughness and microhardness were assessed in immediate, thermocycling and pigmentation tests. The remaining sixty samples were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 20): control (Ctrl), bonding (Bo), pre-bonding resin infiltration (R-Bo). Shear bonding strength, failure mode, micro-leakage depth and interface morphology were evaluated after ceramic bonding. The Tukey test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: For the effect of resin infiltration and bleaching on WSLs, the R-Bl group showed the worst chromic masking ability, with the highest |ΔL|, |Δa|, |Δb|, and ΔE values after treatment. Compared with those in the Bl-R group, the R-Bl and R groups showed significant time-dependent staining, which is possibly attributed to their surface roughness. For the effect of resin infiltration on the adhesive properties of WSLs, resin infiltration reduced the staining penetration depth of WSLs from 2393.54 ± 1118.86 µm to 188.46 ± 89.96 µm (P < 0.05) while reducing WSLs porosity in SEM observation. CONCLUSIONS: Post-bleaching resin infiltration proved to be advantageous in the aesthetic treatment of WSLs. Resin infiltration did not compromise bonding strength but it did reduce microleakage and enhance marginal sealing. Overall, resin infiltration can effectively enhance the chromatic results of treated WSLs and prevent long-term bonding failure between ceramics and enamel. Based on these findings, the use of post-bleaching resin infiltration is recommended, and resin infiltration before ceramic bonding is deemed viable in clinical practice.

The pursuit of predictable implant success in the aesthetic zone continues as technology develops. Creating stable marginal bone and an optimal peri-implant mucosal environment is the foundation for a long-term healthy and aesthetic implant treatment outcome. Tissue stability is dependent on multiple factors, including the regenerative materials used to create the peri-implant supporting tissues and maintain the tissue volume. The present study aims to describe a technique that combines a flapless approach to extract hopeless teeth in the aesthetic zone and implant insertion using an acellular dermal matrix placed to contain the coronal aspect of an innovative ossifying collagen scaffold designed to promote neoformation of vital native bone. This technique combines a minimally invasive approach with the application of a novel biomaterial that offers stable augmentation of the gingival thickness as well as bone fill in the facial gap, the space between the implant and the buccal plate, to ensure predictable aesthetic results. A collection of cases are presented to demonstrate the surgical technique and the situation over a follow-up period of 22 months. Pre- and post-treatment CBCT imaging were utilised to quantify the stability or changes noted in the alveolar bone, and pre-and post-treatment intraoral scanning were used for the same purpose in the peri-implant phenotype. This case series presents stable and aesthetic clinical outcomes evaluated through digital assessment.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the survival and success rate of and the incidence of complications affecting implants inserted and immediately loaded in sites where an impacted tooth was present in the maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 10 patients were treated and 14 implants were inserted, 4 in healed sites and 10 in extraction sites. The implant site preparation started in the crestal bone and continued in the enamel and dentine of the impacted tooth. The radiographic depth of implant penetration into the impacted tooth, peri-implant soft tissue and hard tissue condition at the 1-year follow-up and the last follow-up appointment, marginal bone loss at the 1-year follow-up and the last follow-up appointment, and the final aesthetic result were evaluated. RESULTS: The implants healed uneventfully with an adequate hard and soft tissue response and no adverse clinical or radiographic signs or symptoms. They were in function for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 11 years (mean 7.2 years). CONCLUSION: Although further studies with a larger sample size are required to validate this unconventional approach, it can be considered a valuable clinical option to replace teeth in an area of impaction.

PURPOSE: To establish consensus-driven guidelines that could support the clinical decision-making process for implant-supported rehabilitation of the posterior atrophic maxilla and ultimately improve long-term treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 33 participants were enrolled (18 active members of the Italian Academy of Osseointegration and 15 international experts). Based on the available evidence, the development group discussed and proposed an initial list of 20 statements, which were later evalu-ated by all participants. After the forms were completed, the responses were sent for blinded ana-lysis. In most cases, when a consensus was not reached, the statements were rephrased and sent to the participants for another round of evaluation. Three rounds were planned. RESULTS: After the first round of voting, participants came close to reaching a consensus on six statements, but no consensus was achieved for the other fourteen. Following this, nineteen statements were rephrased and sent to participants again for the second round of voting, after which a consensus was reached for six statements and almost reached for three statements, but no consensus was achieved for the other ten. All 13 statements upon which no consensus was reached were rephrased and included in the third round. After this round, a consensus was achieved for an additional nine statements and almost achieved for three statements, but no consensus was reached for the remaining statement. CONCLUSION: This Delphi consensus highlights the importance of accurate preoperative planning, taking into consideration the maxillomandibular relationship to meet the functional and aesthetic requirements of the final restoration. Emphasis is placed on the role played by the sinus bony walls and floor in providing essential elements for bone formation, and on evaluation of bucco-palatal sinus width for choosing between lateral and transcrestal sinus floor elevation. Tilted and trans-sinus implants are considered viable options, whereas caution is advised when placing pterygoid implants. Zygomatic implants are seen as a potential option in specific cases, such as for completely edentulous elderly or oncological patients, for whom conventional alternatives are unsuitable.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate dentist perceptions of attractive smiles in the Pakistani population, considering different dental proportions. METHODS: Maxillary casts and digital images were used to create symmetrical representations of anterior teeth. dentists' preferences for good and bad teeth proportions, width/height ratios, and various dental proportions (golden, recurring esthetic dental (RED), golden percentage, Preston, and local/observed) were assessed using one sample and paired t-test. The Chi-square test was used to determine the gender disparities and factors affecting smile attractiveness. A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was taken as significant. RESULTS: The RED proportion emerged as the preferred choice for normal-sized teeth, with specialists and general dentists favoring it over the golden proportion. For tall teeth, the golden proportion was predominantly preferred. The golden percentage received limited preference for aesthetic smile construction. CONCLUSIONS: The smiles created using the principles of RED proportion were opted as the most attractive by local dentists. Factors such as tooth arrangement, color, and midline were highlighted as essential considerations in aesthetic smile construction.

BACKGROUND: Fulfilling aesthetic norms is an imperative of modern society. Accordingly, aesthetics has found its important role in dental medicine. The aim was to study whether there is a difference in the perception of tooth shade change and anatomical variations of anterior maxillary teeth among dental students depending on the level of education, gender, and experience in assisting in a dental office. METHODS: The research was conducted among dental students via the Google Forms platform. Students evaluated the aesthetic acceptability of a smile on the unaltered, reference photograph (RP) and on the other 28 photographs in which the tooth shade (lighter and darker teeth), length (shortened central incisors, elongated, and beveled lateral incisors, elongated canines) and position (atypical and typical rotations and diastemas) of the upper maxillary teeth were altered by digital manipulation. The 1-10 assessment scale was used. Statistical analysis comprised one-way Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, X2 tests, t-test, and 3-way MANOVA. RESULTS: In the research 208 students participated, 113 were preclinical students, 104 assisted in dental office and 175 were females. There were no significant effects of gender regarding length and position modifications (p > .05), while women were stricter in evaluation of lighter shade (p < .05). Clinical students were stricter in evaluating all manipulated photographs (MP) except those towards darker shade modifications, while assisting in a dental office or having a dentist in close family showed no significant effects (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: With a higher level of targeted academic education, dental students sharpen their ability to notice deviations from the aesthetic norms of a smile.

INTRODUCTION: Structural abnormalities or anomalies in the anterior teeth, also known as the aesthetic zone, are an important problem for patients and a challenge for dentists. Structural abnormalities or tooth anomalies can change in color, shape, and function. Most dentists prefer minimally invasive aesthetic treatment. One of the aesthetic treatment options for anterior teeth is veneers. Veneer is a restoration that covers the labial part of the tooth with a thin layer of material to correct abnormalities in the color, shape, or function of the tooth. Veneer restoration can be done indirectly with porcelain material made in a laboratory and directly with composite material on the tooth surface or prefabricated which is available from the factory. Componeer is a prefabricated composite veneer that combines the aesthetic properties of ceramic veneers and the adhesive ability of composite veneers to the tooth structure. This case report describes the treatment of two central incisors that had been filled with composite and peg shapes on both lateral incisors using a componeer. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old female patient came to the Dental Conservation Clinic at Dentistry Hospital, Padjadjaran University with the main complaint of her right and left upper front teeth and wanted to repair her old fillings and close the gap between her right and left upper front teeth and her canine teeth. Clinical examination showed that teeth 11 and 21 had been filled with composite which had changed color and had an inharmonious shape as well as a gap between the upper front teeth on the right and left sides and the right and left canine teeth. TREATMENT: The maxilla and mandibular teeth are molded for study models and working models. In the working model, a wax-up is carried out, then a mock-up on the patient's teeth. Next, choose the color and size of the components that match the mock up results. Teeth 11 and 21 had their old composite fillings cleaned and refilled with dentin colored composite, teeth 13, 12, 11, 21, 22, and 23 were prepared with a minimum thickness of 0.3 mm to make room for the componeer material. The teeth was etched and bonded, and bonding was applied to the inner surface of the componeer. The composite is placed on the inner surface of the componeer then placed on the labial surface of the tooth and pressed with a special tool, then light cured. The final step is polishing. TREATMENT RESULTS: Teeth 13, 12, 11, 21, 22, and 23 which had undergone veneer treatment using componeer, were controlled after 1 week of treatment. The patient did not complain about the results of the treatment and said he was satisfied with the treatment.

Improper diagnosis and design, misusing orthodontic technique, relapse after orthodontic treatment, and poor patient compliance may lead to treatment failure, requiring orthodontic retreatment. While in such cases, patients usually have already had their teeth extracted, or are with periodontal, joint, and other dental problems, which often require multidisciplinary treatment. The retreatment of orthodontic patients is difficult, and the treatment options are limited. The characteristics of clear aligner treatment, such as comfortable and beautiful appearance, high degree of digital precision, and personalized tooth arrangement to simulate the final outcome, make it popular in the orthodontic retreatment. This article discusses and summarizes the details of orthodontic design, case monitoring, and the application of clear aligner in orthodontic retreatment of failed cases. Before starting treatment, the difficulty assessment tool (clear aligner treatment complexity assessment tool) can be used to evaluate the difficulty of clear aligner treatment. Orthodontists are recommended to treat orthodontic patients with clear aligners within their ability to avoid treatment failure. The key to the success of the extraction case treatment with clear aligner is to make the correct diagnosis and select the right cases. In the treatment planning, attention should be paid to the restoration of anterior tooth torque, making good use of molar distalization to obtain the space, vertical control, and improving posterior tooth relationship. Proper selection of cases and reasonable design in clear aligner treatment are expected to obtain tooth alignment, good intercuspation, normal overbite and overjet, periodontal health, parallel roots, and to achieve the goal of aesthetic, functional, stable, and healthy orthodontic treatment.

This study aimed to compare the functional and esthetic results in patients following mandibular reconstruction with a free fibula flap (FFF) by virtual surgical planning (VSP) versus the conventional technique. Patients who had undergone mandibular reconstruction with a FFF by VSP or the conventional technique were retrospectively assessed. The two groups were compared regarding functional and esthetic variables with appropriate scales preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively. Twenty-four patients were evaluated in two groups: conventional (n = 8) and VSP (n = 16). The mean amount of mandibular asymmetry was 2.62 mm (SD = 1.59) in the conventional group and 1.19 mm (SD = 1.32) in the VSP group. Of the patients who underwent conventional surgery, 12.5% had mandibular asymmetry of <2 mm and 87.5% had asymmetry of 2-5 mm. Of the VSP patients, 61.5% had mandibular asymmetry of <2 mm and 38.5% had mandibular asymmetry of 2-5 mm (p = 0.03). The mean difference in size of mandibular angle on the surgical and control sides was not significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.62). The difference in mean length of the mandibular body on the surgical side relative to the control side was not significant between the two groups (p = 0.75). Differences in functional variables between the two groups were not significant. Within the limitation of the study, it seems that the VSP technique resulted in better facial symmetry and superior esthetic outcomes compared with the conventional technique.

BACKGROUND: In esthetic dentistry, a thorough esthetic analysis holds significant role in both diagnosing diseases and designing treatment plans. This study established a 3D esthetic analysis workflow based on 3D facial and dental models, and aimed to provide an imperative foundation for the artificial intelligent 3D analysis in future esthetic dentistry. METHODS: The established 3D esthetic analysis workflow includes the following steps: 1) key point detection, 2) coordinate system redetermination and 3) esthetic parameter calculation. The accuracy and reproducibility of this established workflow were evaluated by a self-controlled experiment (n = 15) in which 2D esthetic analysis and direct measurement were taken as control. Measurement differences between 3D and 2D analysis were evaluated with paired t-tests. RESULTS: 3D esthetic analysis demonstrated high consistency and reliability (0.973 < ICC < 1.000). Compared with 2D measurements, the results from 3D esthetic measurements were closer to direct measurements regarding tooth-related esthetic parameters (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The 3D esthetic analysis workflow established for 3D virtual patients demonstrated a high level of consistency and reliability, better than 2D measurements in the precision of tooth-related parameter analysis. These findings indicate a highly promising outlook for achieving an objective, precise, and efficient esthetic analysis in the future, which is expected to result in a more streamlined and user-friendly digital design process. PURPOSE: Despite the differences in material properties and shapes among the different types of prefabricated titanium (pTiA) and individualized hybrid zirconia abutments (ihZiA), the biological and clinical relevance of materials and construction features remains vague. Yet, individualized ihZiA are increasingly implemented into daily routine aiming to satisfy rising expectations. The objective was to compare these two types of abutments in fixed dental prostheses (FDP). METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 462 implants in 102 patients comparing pTiA (52 patients) to ihZiA (50 patients) for FDP. These different treatment regimens were evaluated in terms of peri-implant health, radiographic bone loss, and oral-health related quality of life (OH-QoL) with special consideration of abutment type and superstructure design. RESULTS: ihZiA showed significantly different design features than prefabricated pTiA, but the annual bone loss in both groups did not. Visible titanium in the esthetic zone negatively impacted OHIP 14 scores. The combination of an emergence angle (EA) of < 30° and a concave emergence profile (EP) as well as gingiva thickness (p = 0.002) at the time of the prosthetic restoration significantly improved the annual peri-implant bone loss, independently of the abutment type. CONCLUSION: ihZiA showed comparable results to pTiA. To optimize the long-term outcome, not just material alone but generating adequate soft tissue thickness, minimizing the EA, and applying a concave EP seem to be the most relevant factors. To improve OH-QoL, particular attention must be paid to the esthetic zone.

Tooth loss is an undesirable condition that leads to functional, esthetic and social damage, having an impact on an individual's quality of life. Dental implants are man-made tooth root replacements that are increasingly used to replace a missing tooth. It is important to gather demographic data in order to take precautions before the possible failures. Hence the objective of this study was to retrospectively determine the association between age, gender, and site of implant placement in patients reporting to a private dental institution. This study was carried out from the data obtained from the case records of 1281 patients who had undergone implant therapy. Chi-square test was applied to see associations of gender, age and implant site. The results show that a maximum number of 348 implants (27.7%) were placed in patients aged between 41-50 years. The patient pool consisted of 705 (55%) females and 576 (45%) males. A maximum of 228 implants (17.80%) were placed in region 46 and 224 implants (17.49%) in region 36. Only 2 implants (0.2%) were placed in region 41. There was a positive association between age, gender and site of implant. In those aged 20-30 years, 20.53% of implants were placed, 26.23% in 31-40 years, 27.1% in 41-50 years, 17.95% in 51-60 years and 8.11% in 61-70 years of age. In male, a maximum of 124 implants (54.4%) were placed in region 46 and only 1 implant (50%) in region 41. In females, region 36 had a maximum of 110 implants (49.1%), and the least number of implants were placed in regions 31 and 41. In this study, it can be concluded that general factors such as age and gender had a significant effect on the site of implant placement.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of narrow-diameter implants (NDIs) and regular-diameter implants (RDIs) with bone augmentation in the anterior maxilla, with implant survival rate (ISR) as the primary outcome. Additionally, secondary outcomes such as peri-implant marginal bone loss (MBL), pocket probing depth (PPD), mechanical complications, and biological complications were also considered. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A thorough literature search was performed to identify randomized controlled trials and cohort studies comparing outcomes of NDIs and RDIs with bone augmentation in the anterior maxilla published up to February 2024. Only studies with a minimum follow-up period of 12 months were selected for analysis. Meta-analysis was performed if at least two articles with similar characteristics were available. RESULTS: Of the 288 articles initially considered, 5 were included in the analysis, involving 282 NDIs and 100 RDIs. At the 36-month follow-up, no statistically significant differences in ISR, which ranged 93.8-100% for NDIs and were 100% for RDIs, were observed between the two groups (relative risk, 0.989; 95% confidence interval, 0.839-1.165; p = 0.896). Similarly, MBL and PPD did not differ significantly between the two groups. Soft tissue dehiscence was the most common complication found in RDIs. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that NDIs yield clinical outcomes similar to those of RDIs with bone augmentation in the anterior maxilla over a 36-month follow-up period. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Considering the similar clinical outcomes, the shortened treatment duration and more rapid esthetic improvement associated with NDIs may render them preferrable to RDIs with bone augmentation, particularly in this esthetic zone.
